Kiwanis Club of Evanston Honors City Heroes
Kiwanis Club of Evanston honors City Heroes from the police and fire departments, as well as public safety officers from Evanston Township High School.
Francesca Henderson, a patrol officer with the EPD, was honored for her bravery and coolness during a volatile domestic situation. Members of her family were there to add to the accolades she received. (001)
Paramedic Gary Hicks was also recognized for his ability to make a difference in the lives of those he serves and his fellow officers. A big contingent of firefighters joined in the recognition ceremony. (002)
Three more scholar-athletes from Evanston High School were congratulated by the club; they received a gift card, a certificate of recognition and an inspirational book. As always their stories reinforce the good that today's young people are doing. (003)
And what's more exciting than a little kid seeing his dad get an award? Gary Hick's youngest son had no trouble giving us a smile. (004)
Not pictured is Cassius Barnes, a public safety officer at ETHS, who left the business world to 'give back'. Mr. Barnes has a unique ability to connect with kids, particularly those with special needs and constantly offers encouragement to all ETHS students.

Photo number two--The Evanston Township High School Girls Soccer Team helped make 900 sandwiches for the Special Olympians who held their spring games at ETHS on Sunday, May 3. The girls joined the Kiwanis Club of Evanston in making sandwiches and filling lunch bags. This is the second year the two groups have
worked together. Director of Public Safety at ETHS, Frank Kaminski, has lead the effort to bring the groups together for community activities. The Kiwanis Club purchases the food used for the lunch sacks(and the sacks, too.).
Photo number three--Kiwanian Bob Kurz presents the Hixson Award to Marian Kurz. Hixsons are given for contributions of service to the community. Others recognized included President Stamata Blanas and Kevin Kelly.
