Welcome to The Kiwanis Club of Evanston.
PHOTO CONTEST BEGINS ITS SIXTH YEAR:
FACES OF EVANSTON A SIGN OF SUMMER

For the past six years, the Kiwanis Club of Evanston has presented a unique photographic opportunity for professional and amateur photographers. Find something you love in Evanston, take a picture and enter the Faces of Evanston contest. From students to foreign visitors to established photographers, the lure of the contest has meant a special look at our city.
This year’s contest theme is “Legacy”…what is it that those who live and work in Evanston have created, used or shared that creates a legacy we all live with today?
The contest opens on May 15th and concludes August 31st. While the photos all should reflect Evanston, participants do not need to live in the city.
According to Stamata Blanas, president of the Kiwanis Club and a member of the city’s Arts & Business Committee, “In addition to seeing our town through the camera lens, the contest has served as a springboard for many new photographers to see themselves, capably capturing the essence of our streets. In some cases those amateurs have become professionals. For the pros, it’s a validation of their skill and insights. When we honor the winners, it’s a real celebration of the heart of Evanston.”
Winners are eligible for cash prizes of $250 for first prize, $100 for second prize and $50 for third prize. Photographers can enter by submitting their photos on a CD, in print or online. There is a $5 fee for each photo submitted.
For a complete set of rules click here or call Dr. Stamata Blanas at (847) 475-4544. Another popular feature of the contest has been the People’s Choice Award, an on-line opportunity for anyone to vote for their favorite photo. To vote, individuals are encouraged to go to www.facesofevanston.com. This feature of the contest is available in partnership with Bill Smith of evanstonnow.com.
At the conclusion of the contest, the winning photos are available for viewing at several venues throughout the city, including the Civic Center, Levy Center, Evanston Public Library, First Bank & Trust and several other sites. Sponsorship of the Faces tour is underwritten by grants from First Bank & Trust, St. Frances Hospital, Edward Jones, Interior Effects and Allegra Print & Imaging of Evanston.
BEAT THE STREETS, KIWANIS OF EVANSTON FIND GOLF A ‘WHOLE' LOT OF FUN!
Golfing for a good cause has become a way of life on the North Shore, throw in a perfect
Day, a good golf course, prizes and great camaraderie and it’s easy to see why this has become a summertime ritual.
On Wednesday, June 30 the Kiwanis Foundation of Evanston held its 10th annual Beat the Streets golf get together in perfect weather at the Glencoe Golf club. Some 50 Kiwanians and friends of wrestling joined up to benefit the Beat the Streets organization and the Evanston School of Wrestling. The BTS concept uses a mentoring program to encourage youngsters from age 6 through junior high school to instill leadership values, healthy exercise and friendship.
In Evanston the program finds its outlet at the Evanston School of Wrestling,
housed at Evanston Township High School where it is administered by head wrestling coach, Rudy Salinas. Salinas’ wrestlers guide the younger students and learn leadership lessons themselves in working with the 40 youngsters.
The golf outing raised close to $5000 which covers scholarships to the Evanston School of Wrestling for those children who are unable to pay the fees. Ken Kraft, former head wrestling coach at Northwestern and a leader in wrestling circles in the United States says, “It’s a program where everyone benefits, the youngsters, the coaches and the fund raisers; we can see the successful outcomes for these kids and that encourages all of us.”
In recognition of Dr. Amador's lifetime dedication to the goals of Kiwanis through his involvement with the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation. Division 7 Lt. Governor Jack Senter presents the Luis V. Amador, M.D. Medallion Award to Kiwanis Club of Evanston member Dr. Richard Scott Hopf. Dr. Hopf has demonstrated over an extended time, extra-ordinary personal dedication of his time and resources to the pursuit of charitable, benevolent and community service activities consistent with the objectives of Kiwanis.
